Diabetic Retinopathy

What it is

Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye condition caused by damage to the blood vessels in the retina as a result of diabetes. Because diabetes affects the entire body, the eyes are especially vulnerable, particularly in cases of longstanding or poorly controlled blood sugar. Early changes may not cause symptoms, but as the condition progresses it can lead to blurred vision, floaters, difficulty with night vision, or even blindness if left unchecked.

Regular eye examinations are essential for individuals with diabetes, as monitoring allows for early detection and timely management of changes before vision is permanently affected. Ongoing follow-up care plays a crucial role in protecting sight and reducing the risk of vision loss from diabetic retinopathy.
