Pterygium is a growth of tissue that develops on the surface of the eye, often related to excessive sun, wind, or dust exposure. It usually starts on the conjunctiva (the transparent membrane covering the surface of the eye) and can extend onto the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. While it may begin as a small, cosmetic concern, a pterygium can cause irritation, redness, a foreign body sensation, and blurry vision. In more advanced cases, it can scar the cornea and lead to permanent vision loss.

Treatment depends on the size, symptoms, and impact on vision. Lubricating drops or protective measures may help in early stages, while surgical removal is considered when the pterygium threatens sight, causes scarring, or produces significant discomfort. Modern surgical techniques are available to restore comfort and protect vision in affected eyes.
